The Eight Virtues of Bushidō

Bushidō, code of Samurai in Japan, was inspired by the Code of Chivalry of European Knights and was formally codified durint the Edo Period, although, it has its origins from the Kamakura period. 1 The following are the main values portrayed in the Bushidō:2

  1. Rectitude (義 – Gi)

  2. Courage (勇 – Yū)

  3. Benevolence (仁 – Jin)

  4. Respect (礼 – Rei)

  5. Honesty (誠 – Makoto or 信 – Shin)

  6. Honor (名誉 – Meiyo)

  7. Loyalty (忠義 – Chūgi)

  8. Self-Control (自制 – Jisei)

As we continue on this series, you will be able to read other such principles and values in the second of this substack called “The Perfect Blossom”, reminescent of the movie “The Last Samurai”. My hope is that this collection will become a resource for you in your Martial Arts journey.

I didn’t realize there were so many different writings on the Bushidō. A quick wikipedia search will show you all writers who discussed this topics at full length. We might do a deeper dive on the Bushidō some time in the future, however, the scope of this article is just to mention the values of Bushidō.
